Rao’s father taught him how to play music. She went to Loyola School, where she completed her high school education and joined the chorus, then Little Flower School in Jamshedpur. Shilpa Rao was inspired to pursue a singing career after meeting Hariharan when he was 13 years old. Hariharan recommended that Rao begin training with Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. She made her living and worked for three years as a jingle singer.

While attending college, Shilpa Rao got to know Mithun Sharma, who invited him to record the song “Tose Naina” for Anwar (Anwar 2007). Although “Sehra” was criticized by music reviewers, it was followed by the highly regarded tracks “Woh Ajnabee” and “Teri Tamanna.” Raja Sen of gave specific praise to Rao’s “strong vocals”.

Raghav Sachar‘s 2008 remix of One Two Three’s “Gup Chup” served as Rao’s first single. “Ek Lau” by Amit Trivedi from Aamir came next. According to Rao, “Ek Lau” was a song of optimism for the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. He asserted that this song would encourage others. The Hindi song “Main Sajda” from the 2008 film Good Luck is sung by Shilpa Rao. Shilpa Rao has also provided the vocals for the Hijack song “Koi Na Jaane“.
