Early Life

On October 4, 1989, in New Delhi, Krishna Kaul was born into a family of Kashmiri Pandits. He mentions this in his songs and interviews. He was educated for a few years in South London, where he also lived for a portion of his early years. Kaul began composing rap lyrics at the age of 14, having grown up listening to hip-hop music from a young age. He attempted to fit in with the other kids by engaging in rap fights at school. He discusses this time in his life in his song Dream.

In 2006, Kaul began producing music and posting it on his MySpace profile. By 2008, he had amassed a modest following in New Delhi and had been featured on tracks by American and Canadian musicians. His first taste of fame appeared when the music video for “Kaisa Mera Desh” was released in 2010. It was the first Indian hip-hop song to be featured on YouTube, and it quickly rose to the #2 spot as one of the most-watched music videos in India. In 2013, he also collaborated with the global NGO Save The Children to create the song “Vijay“.

Following infrequent releases on the underground scene, Kaul changed his stage name from Prozpekt to KR$NA in 2013 upon landing a record deal with Universal Music. His first record, Sellout, was an all-English album published by Universal Music in May 2014, with the lead track “Last Night” reaching the fifth rank on the Vh1 Music Charts in India. Kaul became the first hip-hop performer in India to tour five cities with a band in support of an album. Subsequently, the music video for the lead single “Sellout” was launched; nevertheless, its influence was limited by the label’s decreasing budget and poor promotion.

With the release of “Vyanjan” in Hindi in 2016, Kaul made a comeback after a two-year hiatus. Following the song’s popularity, he signed with the artist management company DNH (now KALAMKAAR) Artists in 2017 and later joined as a partner in 2018. Among the acts they represent are Ankit Khanna and Raftaar.

In January 2021, KR$NA was a featured artist on the song “Crossroads” by American rapper Hi-Rez, which also featured Royce da 5’9″.

His song “Roll Up” with Badshah from the album “Still Here” amassed over 10 million views on YouTube in less than a month.
